Chapter 92. Bully Of Alley

The old locust tree at the entrance of the alley has a history of nearly a hundred years. May is the season when the locust flowers are in full bloom, bunches of flowers hang upside down, like little white wind chimes hanging all over the tree. When the breeze blows, the white wind chimes sway slightly, which looks very pleasing to the eye.

However, for children, what attracts them more than the appearance of locust flowers is their sweet smell.

When Du Yan saw the tree full of locust flowers, he ran straight towards the tree. He simply kicked off his shoes and tried to climb the tree barefoot.

Zhang Jing jumped anxiously: “Why are you in such a hurry! Can you climb a tree?”

Du Yan turned around and grinned: “When I lived with my parents, there were several big trees planted in front of our house, and I even built a small tree house on the tree. You asked me if I could climb trees, don’t look down on me.”

Zhang Jing, however, was a mature and cautious person. He looked at the height of the old locust tree and said: “Trees abroad may be different from those in China. How about I borrow a ladder?”

Du Yan curled his lips and said: “What’s the use of a ladder? Not manly at all. Of course, climbing a tree only counts if you climb up with your own hands and feet, don’t you agree, Little Miss Zhang?”

Zhang Jing thought he was much more mature than Du Yan, so he certainly didn’t mind him being called Little Miss, but he was a little angry at the other person’s indifference to his safety.

However, now that the adults of both families were out, he was the only one who could take the responsibility of watching over this naughty boy. Zhang Jing stood helplessly under the tree, ready to remind him at any time not to go to dangerous places.

Meanwhile, Du Yan quickly climbed up, sat on the tree branch, and threw handfuls of locust flowers down.

Zhang Jing was looking up at Du Yan’s feet and was caught off guard by the locust flowers thrown on him. He only heard Du Yan laughing from above: “You look pretty good with the flowers on, and you look more like a Little Miss!”

Zhang Jing glared at him, too lazy to engage in such childish things as bickering. He bent down to pick up the scattered locust flowers and stuffed them into the cloth bag he was carrying.

The two of them argued and cooperated at the same time, and it didn’t take much time to pick a bag full of locust flowers.

Zhang Jing looked at the bag in his hand and said: “It’s almost full, Du Yan, you can come down now.”

After hearing this, Du Yan did not get greedy and climbed down directly. When he was about half a meter from the ground, the old tree bark under his feet, perhaps because it was rotten due to age, broke with a crackling sound.

“Ah!” Du Yan’s foot slipped, and he screamed and rolled down.

Zhang Jing saw that something was wrong and rushed to help him, but he didn’t realize that he was only a five-year-old child, and the two of them fell into a heap. Fortunately, there was soft grass under the big locust tree, so nothing happened.

Zhang Jing was dizzy from the fall. When he came to himself, he saw Du Yan sitting on his waist and laughing.

Zhang Jing didn’t know what he was laughing at, so he asked: “Are you okay? You fell down, but you’re still laughing so happily?”

Du Yan said: “You usually look clean and tidy like a Little Miss, but now you look much better with your face covered in dust.”

Zhang Jing was originally a clean person. After hearing what Du Yan said, he subconsciously wiped his face. When he saw that his palms were full of mud, he suddenly felt uncomfortable all over.

Du Yan, however, was completely oblivious and was still laughing in a gloating manner.

Zhang Jing glared at him and said in a somewhat aggressive tone: “Move!”

Du Yan didn’t cause any more trouble and just stood up. Zhang Jing got up from the ground and walked home without saying anything to Du Yan.

Du Yan chased after him with the bag in his hand: “Little old man, are you really angry?”

Zhang Jing said angrily: “If I hang out with you again, then I, then I…”

Du Yan asked: “Then you what?”

Zhang Jing blinked but didn’t finish his words. He closed his mouth and refused to talk to Du Yan anymore.

Time passed by so quickly as the two of them played and quarreled, and in the blink of an eye, a year had passed.

Du Yan had achieved his goal ahead of schedule within this year and had become the little bully of the alley. He climbed up roofs, walked cats, and played with dogs, and was a well-known devil in the alley. In addition, Du Yan had also subdued a group of children of similar age, and they ran wild all day long in the alley.

Zhang Jing usually had to attend a lot of hobby classes and didn’t want to play with a bunch of monkeys. The relationship between the two was far from being as inseparable as the two family’s elders expected.

Although Zhang Jing was quite disgusted with Du Yan verbally and seemed to be unwilling to talk to him, when Du Yan was about to do something dangerous, he would always follow him dutifully.

Thus, the lonely Zhang Jing integrated into the group of children in the alley in such a strange way.

Just as the friendship between Du Yan and Zhang Jing was developing in a strange way, another protagonist of the movie, Shi An, finally appeared.

When Shi An and his mother came to the alley together, Du Yan was locked up by his grandparents because of the trouble he had made the day before, so he could only climb over the wall to harass Zhang Jing for fun.

The grapes in the yard were ripe, and Zhang Jing was still sitting under the grape trellis, reading the picture book. Du Yan was sitting on the ladder, picking grapes with great interest.

He was not greedy. He picked a few bunches, climbed down the ladder, washed them, and then said: “Zhang Jing, do you want some grapes?”

“No.” Zhang Jing refused without even raising his head, his eyes focused on the picture book.

Du Yan, who was used to being rejected by Zhang Jing, was not angry at all. Instead, he rolled his eyes and smiled wickedly.

Du Yan picked a green grape that was completely unripe and walked over with ill intentions: “This grape looks pretty good, very sweet.”

Zhang Jing was very focused when reading and opened his mouth without any sense of danger. Du Yan raised his hand and stuffed the green grape into Zhang Jing’s mouth.

“Eh!”

Caught off guard, Zhang Jing shuddered from the sourness, his whole face was crumpled, and looked very anguished.

But due to his good upbringing, Zhang Jing couldn’t spit the grape in his mouth onto the ground, so he could only swallow it with his neck stiffened.

When he came back to his senses from the thrill, he saw Du Yan pointing at him and laughing. Zhang Jing was so angry that he threw the picture book on the table and chased after Du Yan to beat him up.

Du Yan ran away, and the two of them ran around the yard.

While the two were fighting, Grandma Li led a mother and son into the courtyard.

Seeing Zhang Jing chasing Du Yan and making trouble, Grandma Li stopped her grandson with a smile: “Xiao Jing, Xiao Yan is younger than you. You should be more tolerant of him.”

Zhang Jin was very obedient and stopped immediately. However, when he saw Du Yan hiding behind his grandma and making faces, he glared at Du Yan angrily.

Grandma Li was looking at everything with a smile on her face. Since Du Yan from next door moved in, her family’s Zhang Jing looked more and more like a child of this age.

Seeing that the two children were about to start chasing each other again, Grandma Li smiled and stopped them: “Okay, stop making trouble. I’ll introduce a new friend to you two.”

After that, she introduced Shi An’s mother and Shi An to the two children. The three children were all of the same age, with Shi An being the youngest and Zhang Jing being the oldest.

The oldest, Zhang Jing, was naturally told by Grandma Li to take good care of little Shi An in the future.

Zhang Jing looked at Shi An hiding behind his mother. He looked fair, tender, quiet, and cute, but a little shy. He just looked at him with a pair of big, round eyes and didn’t come out to say hello.

Zhang Jing felt that having Du Yan was already annoying enough for him. This kid named Shi An looked very quiet anyway and wouldn’t cause any trouble living at home, so he didn’t feel much resistance.

He smiled politely and said: “Hello, my name is Zhang Jing. That guy…”

Before Zhang Jing could finish his words, Du Yan interrupted him: “My name is Du Yan, and I live next door.”

There were not many changes in the following days. Although there was one more family in the yard, the impact on Zhang Jing’s life was far less than when Du Yan moved in next door.

When Zhang Jing was at home, he was very kind to Shi An and did not mind Shi An touching his toys or picture books, but when he was out, he would not take the initiative to talk to Shi An.

Until one day, Du Yan called a group of friends together and said they were going to rob bird nests. Of course, Zhang Jing couldn’t help but follow this dangerous operation.

When the sun was about to set, Du Yan and Zhang Jing returned home. Du Yan had a cut on his arm, and Zhang Jing criticized him with a bad look on his face.

Du Yan knew that at this time, the best way was to shut up and listen to the lecture, otherwise Zhang Jing would definitely tell his grandparents about it, and he would inevitably be locked up for a few days.

At this moment, the two saw Lin Hu and a group of children gathered around the corner and did not know what they were doing.

The six – or seven-year-old kids in the alley were actually divided into two groups, one led by Du Yan and the other led by Lin Hu at the alley entrance.

The two groups of kids disliked each other, and fighting was common.

As soon as Du Yan saw that it was Lin Hu, he went over to cause trouble without saying anything.

Zhang Jing grabbed him and asked: “What do you want to do?”

Du Yan said: “Didn’t you see them surrounding the child inside? His clothes looked familiar. It seemed to be the child who lived in your house, right?”

At this moment, Zhang Jing seemed somewhat cold and indifferent, which was not in line with his age: “What does that have to do with you?”

Du Yan shook off Zhang Jing’s hand and said: “I just don’t like that brat Lin Hu, so I want to make trouble.”

Zhang Jing didn’t hold Du Yan back and watched the kid rush over and kick Lin Hu in the butt. Lin Hu didn’t find out in time and was kicked to the ground by Du Yan.

“Lin Hu! This is my territory!” Du Yan was quite cool, pointing at Lin Hu and starting to speak harshly.

Zhang Jing just felt overwhelmed. There were three or four people on Lin Hu’s side. Even if Du Yan could win, he would still be bruised and battered.

All of this was due to that little kid named Shi An. He looked at Shi An curled up in the corner with some dissatisfaction.
