Chapter 120. Research Result

The farther away from Homeland, the more dilapidated the surrounding environment becomes. These were once places where humans lived, but now they were all covered with yellow sand, and even the plants along the road were not as vibrant as those at Homeland.

Following the abandoned road, Shen Heng led Du Yan to a deserted town. He stopped in the center of the town. The town was a bit remote and not on the connecting line between the two Homelands, so it was naturally sparsely populated.

However, this town was unexpectedly clean, with no signs of any radiation-induced mutant creatures.

Shen Heng put Du Yan down in front of the best-preserved building in the center of the town.

Du Yan looked around and asked directly: “Is this your supply point?”

Shen Heng was a little surprised: “How do you know?”

Du Yan said: “I’m not stupid. This town has no human life and no mutant creatures. It must have been cleaned up by someone.”

Shen Heng nodded and said: “Yes, come in.”

After opening the door, Du Yan was slightly surprised. Unlike the run-down exterior, the interior of the small building was indeed exceptionally clean and tidy. The furniture was complete, and the soft sofa in the middle of the living room looked very comfortable.

Du Yan sighed: “I can’t believe you’re living quite comfortably.”

Shen Heng said: “I have gathered all the furniture in good condition from all over town, and I always manage to keep it in good condition.”

In fact, this is not the case. Shen Heng had many supply points. Among the supply points that were quite far from Homeland No. 1, this was the most comfortable place for him.

Shen Heng always felt that he couldn’t bear to let Du Yan stay in those messy and poor supply points for a night.

Shen Heng settled Du Yan on the sofa, turned around, and walked into the basement, bringing up a bunch of canned food.

He spread the food on the table, with a distressed look on his face: “Although these foods are pure foods exchanged from the trading centre, they will always be exposed to radiation if left outside for a long time.”

Shen Heng patiently scanned the cans one by one with the instrument and finally picked the one with the lowest radiation and pushed it in front of Du Yan.

“Why don’t you just eat something first, I’ll find a chance to go back and get some anti-radiation medicine later. I still have a few bottles of 100% pure medicine.”

Du Yan glanced at him and said: “You saw it today. I will never go back to Homeland. Why do you still care about the radiation problem?”

Shen Heng said: “It doesn’t matter. If you can’t stay in Homeland No. 1, I can send you to another Homeland.”

Du Yan was a little curious and went over: “You heard the broadcast, right? I am a thief who stole something and ran away. Not only did you not arrest me and hand me over to the institute, but you actually helped me absconding?”

Shen Heng was not a man of many words. When he was on the run, his only thought was to take Du Yan away, without thinking too much. After arriving at this supply point, he only thought about finding a place for Du Yan to live in peace.

Now, being asked this question by Du Yan, Shen Heng was completely stunned. If Du Yan really was the one who stole things from the research institute and ran away, then he shouldn’t have protected him.

In Shen Heng’s view, First Research Institute was the most important institution that could improve the human condition and change the status quo of the earth. He had also been doing his best to help the First Research Institute collect the necessary resources and promote the development speed of various research projects.

However, the young man in front of him was the one who stole the important results of First Research Institute. This seemed to be in great conflict with Shen Heng’s code of conduct.

Shen Heng was stunned for a long time and finally uttered: “Don’t do bad things in the future.”

Seeing this, Du Yan laughed out loud: “You really believe it. What was said on the broadcast today is all fake. I didn’t steal anything.”

Du Yan did not explain much, nor did he produce any evidence. Shen Heng inexplicably believed it just by looking at the smiling face in front of him.

He whispered: “I knew you were not that kind of person.”

“However, I still don’t want to go to Homeland, whether it’s Homeland No. 1 or other Homelands. I just want to look around.” At this point, Du Yan looked at Shen Heng, with a bit of grievance in his eyes: “Can’t you take me with you? Why do you have to send me to Homeland? Do you hate me so much that you have to drive me away?”

Shen Heng shook his head repeatedly: “I don’t hate you, nor do I want to drive you away.”

“Then can I follow you?” Du Yan was determined to take this opportunity to get close to Shen Heng.

Shen Heng wanted to refuse, but seeing Du Yan’s expectant eyes, he couldn’t say anything. He just took out a newspaper from under the coffee table and handed it to Du Yan.

The name of the newspaper was simple and crude. It is called 《Infected Weekly》.

Even Infected with no future also needs daily entertainment. This weekly report was similar to this, publishing various combat experiences, newly discovered mutants, and even mutant insect recipes, etc.

Du Yan had never read the weekly report of Infected, but he was very interested in it. He asked as he flipped through the report: “Can mutant cockroaches be eaten? They look so disgusting. Can they really be eaten?”

Seeing that the other party had not grasped the main point at all, Shen Heng had no choice but to walk over helplessly and directly turn the newspaper to the page he wanted the other party to read: “I will tell you about the mutated cockroach later, look here first.”

The page Du Yan opened was a biography column, and the person reported was Shen Heng.

Shen Heng said: “Some things, although not as exaggerated as mentioned above, are basically true.”

Du Yan read very quickly and finished the entire article with just a quick glance. He looked at Shen Heng with admiration in his eyes: “Wow, are you really as powerful as it says above that you can kick down a house with one kick? Even the latest combat mecha can’t withstand your punch?”

“…” Shen Heng found that if he didn’t speak directly, Du Yan would probably never pay attention to important things.

“What I mean is that people who stay with me for a long time will indeed cause the radiation level to increase. Ordinary anti-radiation drugs can’t eliminate the radiation level caused by me.”

Shen Heng saw the smile on Du Yan’s face disappear, and his heart sank, but he still finished his words: “So I can only keep my distance from everyone. If I stay with them for too long, they might die, or they might turn into an irrational, mutant creature. Do you understand?”

“Really?” Du Yan asked.

Shen Heng nodded. He didn’t want to see the fear in Du Yan’s eyes, but he still gritted his teeth and admitted: “Yes.”

Shen Heng was waiting for the final verdict. As long as Du Yan opened his mouth, he would leave the room and wait outside the door. Then he would send Du Yan to another Homeland tomorrow, and they would never see each other again.

Unexpectedly, Du Yan smiled again, his eyebrows curved, and he said nonchalantly: “You are a good person in every way, except that your memory is not very good. I told you this when we just met yesterday. I am not afraid of radiation.”

Shen Heng was stunned and said subconsciously: “This is not a joke. When I picked you up yesterday, you had a high fever due to radiation reaction. If I hadn’t injected you with anti-radiation drugs, you would have died long ago. How could you not be afraid of radiation?”

Du Yan knew that given Shen Heng’s stubbornness, if there was no evidence before him, the other party would never believe in his special physique.

Du Yan asked directly: “This newspaper said that people who come into direct contact with you will be irradiated immediately. Is that true?”

Shen Heng nodded: “It’s true.”

Du Yan stood up, threw himself on Shen Heng, hugged his neck, and kissed him on the face.

“……”

Shen Heng, an Infected with an unparalleled reflex nerve, was completely stunned. He could not escape the attack of a weak Pure One. When the boy pounced on him, Shen Heng was stunned. Before he could react, he felt soft lips falling on his face.

Shen Heng’s mind went blank. His powerful hands could have easily lifted the boy up, but now they were like a mecha that had lost its energy control and was frozen in mid-air.

Du Yan, however, acted as if nothing had happened. After finishing all this, he snatched the scanning device from Shen Heng’s hand, scanned it over his body, and said: “See, I didn’t lie to you.”

Shen Heng’s brain had not yet recovered, and he was almost following every command and action. He looked down and found that the radiation level displayed on the screen was zero.

Shen Heng became even more confused and asked: “This, what is going on?”

Du Yan said: “Strictly speaking, I did steal the important research results of the institute and ran away.”

He looked at Shen Heng and pointed at himself: “But the research result is I.”

“I have the gene that can purify my own radiation. I had a high fever when you picked me up, but it was just because I couldn’t adapt to the outside environment for a while and had a rejection reaction.”

“As long as I can remember, I have been staying in the institute,” Du Yan said: “They were afraid that I would be contaminated by radiation, so they never allowed me to leave the institute.”

Shen Heng looked at Du Yan’s dejected expression and felt a little distressed: “Where are your parents?”

Du Yan shook his head: “I don’t know, I have never met my parents. I heard from the researcher who took care of me growing up that they sent me to the research institute in exchange for a large sum of money, a large sum of money that was enough for them to live a life of ease.”

At this point, Du Yan looked into Shen Heng’s eyes with great expectation: “In fact, I also know that the gene that can purify radiation by itself is extremely important to human beings. If the secret can be discovered one day, human beings will not have to shrink in the light curtain like they are now and dare not go anywhere. I know that I am important, I just want to see the outside world, and when I have seen it, I will go back obediently, okay?”

After Du Yan finished speaking, he fell silent, waiting for Shen Heng’s choice.

Shen Heng only felt a sharp pain deep in his heart. The boy in front of him had been trapped in a small research institute since birth, and he had only seen a few faces. It was natural for him to be so eager for the outside world.

Here, Shen Heng was feeling sorry for Du Yan, while there Du Yan was being criticized.

Xiao Ba asked in Du Yan’s mind: “Du Xiao Yan, you are such a liar. Apart from the fact that you are not afraid of radiation, you didn’t tell Shen Heng a single truth.”

Du Yan, however, did not feel the slightest bit of guilt: “I am afraid that if I tell the truth, Shen Heng’s faith will collapse. After all, he is a hero who appears to be lonely and dark on the surface but actually yearns for light in his heart…”
