Chapter 122. Behemoth

When Du Yan woke up, he was the only one left in the bed. He glanced at the time, and it was already noon.

In this dream, Du Yan’s body was indeed very weak. He escaped from the research institute the day before yesterday and fled for his life in the trading center yesterday. His body was indeed extremely tired.

Perhaps it was the sense of security brought by Shen Heng that allowed Du Yan to let down his guard and completely relax, resulting in him sleeping until noon.

Du Yan got up and walked out of the door after finishing sorting out himself. There was still no one in the living room. He did not panic, either. Shen Heng was a man of his word and would never go back on his promise.

Du Yan thought that Shen Heng couldn’t run away anyway, so there was nothing to be surprised about even if he had left for a while. However, his resolute mentality completely collapsed when he opened the door.

In the courtyard that was empty yesterday, a gigantic vehicle appeared. Du Yan was familiar with this kind of vehicle. It was nuclear powered, had great horsepower, and could carry a lot of things.

Infected have no fixed place to live, and most of them who travel in groups have a vehicle called ‘Behemoth’ as their mobile home.

However, Shen Heng has always been alone and mostly uses motorcycles or small off-road vehicles as a means of transportation. This gigantic vehicle was just a burden to him.

Perhaps because of the sound of Du Yan opening the door, the person working in the vehicle quickly opened the door and jumped out.

Shen Heng had beads of sweat on his head. He was only wearing a black vest, and his pants were stained with oil. It seemed that he had been busy for a while.

He picked up the towel beside him and wiped his face: “Now that you are up, eat some canned food first. After that, we will leave here. We can eat fresh meat when we reach the infected area.”

Du Yan pointed at the vehicle and said: “Where did this vehicle come from? I didn’t see any place yesterday where this colossus could be hidden.”

Shen Heng explained: “In the early morning today, I went back to Homeland No. 1 and loaded some useful things onto the truck and brought them here.”

“Do you need such a giant vehicle?” Du Yan walked over, stood on tiptoe and took a look, and found that it was almost a small room.

“You are different from me. If you live in the open air, your body will not be able to bear it.” Shen Heng thought it was natural.

Well, Du Yan admitted that Shen Heng’s concerns were indeed reasonable, and he asked again: “Wait, you came from Homeland No. 1, a vehicle of this size can’t be that fast, right?”

Shen Heng nodded: “Yes, I carried it here because I was afraid you would get anxious waiting.”

“…” The weak Du Yan had no way of understanding Infected’s behavior, and he also couldn’t imagine how Shen Heng could carry such a giant vehicle and come back at such a fast speed.

However, the reality is that the gap between Infected and Pure One is almost as great as that between species.

After lunch, Shen Heng took Du Yan to the direction of Homeland No. 5. Du Yan did not stay in the back room but sat in the passenger seat.

Du Yan was disassembling a pistol in his hand. This pistol was just given to him by Shen Heng, who said it was for self-defense.

“This gun is no good. Judging from its structure, it is too weak and should not pose a fatal threat to mutants.” Du Yan quickly disassembled the gun into parts and curled his lips in disgust.

Shen Heng was somewhat helpless: “Your movements are quite skillful.”

Du Yan laughed, looking very proud: “Do you think I am the kind of kid who does whatever he wants without thinking? Since I want to venture into the outside world, I will naturally make all the preparations. For us Pure Ones with weak physical fitness, the number of mechas is too small and the energy consumption is too high. Firearms are the most practical.”

Shen Heng saw that Du Yan was very knowledgeable when talking about firearms, so he nodded and said: “There are more powerful weapons behind. I was afraid that you might hurt yourself if you are not familiar with them, so I picked this one for you to get familiar with. Since you have done some research, you can pick the one you like later.”

“That’s about right.” Du Yan assembled the pistol and tried aiming outside the window.

The light on the vehicle’s radio suddenly lit up, indicating that there was a global broadcast. Shen Heng reached out and turned it on, and the broadcast sounded with an electric noise.

“Fellow compatriots, a staff member of the First Research Institute, has stolen a new type of anti-radiation agent and is now absconding…”

The content of the broadcast was exactly the same as what they heard in the trading center the day before. The First Research Institute had already started hunting for Du Yan.

Shen Heng frowned slightly, but Du Yan ruffled his hair and asked: “Do you have anything in your collection that can be used for disguise? I’m a bit conspicuous now. It is said that before the war, there was something called cosmetics that could change skin color or something.”

Shen Heng was slightly stunned and said: “I don’t have it here. I’ll go  look for it in the city ahead. But I don’t know if it’s something from before the war can still be used.”

The two were discussing the disguise when Shen Heng’s private communicator lit up again, indicating that a message had come in.

Shen Heng raised his hand and opened it, and a man’s voice came from inside.

“This is the 135th tribal settlement. Are you on your way back now?”

After Shen Heng heard this, he showed an awkward expression on his face. He glanced at Du Yan, not knowing how to start.

Du Yan was quick-witted. As soon as he saw Shen Heng’s expression, he knew something was wrong. He asked directly: “Is there something that requires you to change your route? You can’t go to Homeland No. 5 for the time being?”

Shen Heng nodded: “So many things happened in the past two days that I almost forgot the main purpose of returning to Homeland No. 1 this time, which was to help them in exchange for anti-radiation drugs.”

Du Yan was a little surprised and asked: “What does tribal settlement mean? Aren’t the human settlements now divided into major Homelands and scattered shelters? And why did they ask you to help in  exchange for radiation drugs?”

Shen Heng explained: “The tribal settlements are not officially recognized. They do not have Homeland’s identity cards or shelter’s, and so the trading center won’t trade with them.”

“Not officially recognized? Why?” Du Yan’s knowledge of the outside world of Homelands came from materials, so he naturally knew nothing about the tribal settlements recorded in the materials.

Shen Heng patiently explained the origin of the tribal settlement.

Simply put, these tribal settlements are where Infected and Pure Ones who left their Homelands live together. The current human ruling class actually advocates the isolation of Pure Ones and Infected, and the official reason is naturally for the continuation of the human race.

However, there are still many Pure Ones who hate the life of being in confinement and try to leave. In order to avoid genetic pollution and curb the Pure Ones’s behavior of leaving their homes, the ruling class issued a ban, strictly prohibiting shelters outside of their Homelands from taking in Pure Ones who escaped secretly.

Du Yan still found it a little strange: “To be honest, Pure Ones are completely useless in the world outside the Homelands. Why do these Infected take the risk of not being officially recognized by the government to take them in?”

Shen Heng glanced at Du Yan and then quickly looked at the road ahead: “In order to reproduce, they are betting on the one in ten thousand chance that they can continue their bloodline…”

Du Yan was silent for a moment, then suddenly laughed: “Continuing the bloodline? What a wonderful hope.”

His laughter sounded like it had some other meaning.

Shen Heng didn’t seem to notice but asked: “Then let’s go to the 135th tribal settlement first, okay?”

“Sure, I’m all here to see the outside world, so the order doesn’t matter.”

After Shen Heng got Du Yan’s consent, he turned the steering wheel and turned the vehicle in another direction.

The 135th tribal settlement was located at the border of Homeland No. 1 and Homeland No. 2. It can only be regarded as a small settlement with no more than a hundred residents. In addition, it was located in a remote area, so many people didn’t know that there was a human settlement here.

Old A came to the entrance of the settlement again today. He stood on the sentry post on the cliff and looked into the distance.

(TN:- Yes. The name is written as Old A)

The only thing keeping him company was the electronic machine gun turret. They had spent a lot of resources to buy the new machine gun turret, which used the latest infrared detection technology and was vigilantly scanning for mutant creatures that might appear from all directions.

Old A was waiting for someone, the one who could save the entire tribe at this moment.

He had been waiting at the sentry post for three consecutive days, returning home disappointed every day, and then losing several companions quietly at night.

Fortunately, today’s wait finally paid off.

At the end of the gray road, a moving object finally appeared. Old A was delighted and took a few steps forward, but stopped the moment he saw it clearly.

It was a ‘behemoth’.

Not him. Shen Heng would never choose a behemoth as a means of transportation.

Old A became alert. It was hard to say that Infected, who suddenly appeared in such a remote tribal settlement, showed up with good intentions. He stood up and turned on all the remaining machine gun turrets that had been turned off for the purpose of saving power.

However, the ‘behemoth’ just happened to stop outside the warning range of the machine gun turrets, the door opened, and someone jumped out from it.

Old A put down the communicator in his hand and looked at the familiar figure. He knew it was a false alarm.

He raised his hand to turn off the machine gun turrets and was about to step down from the sentry post when he saw a scene that made his jaw drop.

Shen Heng, who was like a lone wolf and always walked alone, actually turned around and picked someone up from the vehicle! Looking at his movements, he was extremely gentle and careful, as if he was afraid of losing the person’s hair by touching.

Old A rubbed his eyes and even began to wonder if he was genetically aged and about to enter the death stage, which was why he saw such an incredible hallucination.

However, even though he rubbed his eyes until they were a little sore, the illusion did not disappear. The person who was carried down by Shen Heng also revealed his face at this moment. It turned out to be a Pure One boy with fair skin and delicate features. He looked like a spoiled child.

Shen Heng actually kidnapped a Pure One from Homeland No. 1? That’s not right. Why would he kidnap a boy? He can’t reproduce…

Old A finally couldn’t help it, jumped down from the sentry post, and walked forward with a lot of doubts.
