Chapter 125. New Excuse

When Du Yan heard what Old A said, he became even more suspicious. He stood up and moved towards the tea table, wanting to take the severed limb and take a closer look.

As soon as he stretched out his hand, it was grabbed by someone. Du Yan looked up and saw Shen Heng’s disapproving expression.

“This mutant creature can be considered a small radiation source. It’s better for you not to come into contact with it.” Shen Heng said.

With Old A around, Du Yan would definitely not argue with him about his special physique.

He nodded obediently, put his hand back, and then said: “Then bring it over and let me take a closer look, okay?”

Whenever Du Yan spoke in this tone, Shen Heng would probably try to reach the moon in the sky, let alone just hold something.

Old A saw Du Yan sitting there, almost using Shen Heng as his own hand, instructing him to turn the forelimb over and over to study it.

After watching it, Du Yan didn’t say anything. He just sat back on the sofa, hugged a pillow, and pretended to be just a bystander who listened attentively.

Shen Heng didn’t expect Du Yan to see any clues. He knew Du Yan’s personality and thought he was just curious. Seeing that he didn’t want to look at it anymore, he put the severed limb back on the coffee table.

Seeing this, Old A asked: “When you fought with this thing just now, didn’t you notice anything wrong?”

Shen Heng shook his head. The time he fought with the mutant was very short. The mutant immediately cut off his limb to save his life when he found that he was no match for him. In addition, the mutant’s body was covered with black hair like steel needles and was very fast.

Even Shen Heng only saw a rough outline and thought it was a creature that had mutated from an animal like a monkey or gorilla after being irradiated.

Now, it seems that this is not the case at all. Because even the most human-like gorillas have fundamentally different hand structures from humans. The forelimb in front of him, except the steel-like black hair, looks exactly like a human hand.

Shen Heng was a little worried. Could it be that after being irradiated, humans began to change in another direction?

When Old A thought about this, he felt a little heavy. For a moment, no one in the hall spoke, and the three of them fell into a strange silence around a severed hand.

Du Yan took a look at Shen Heng and knew that he actually cared about the world. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be alone in the movie and insist on cleaning up all the ruined cities.

He poked Shen Heng’s back with his finger and asked: “I heard that when the radiation level of Infected reaches the limit, a secondary mutation will occur, and then they will become irrational monsters. Is it like this?”

Shen Heng shook his head and said: “I have seen Infected with secondary mutations, and they are not like this. After the secondary mutation, the muscles of the whole person will atrophy, and finally, the bones will slowly dissolve. In the late stage, they are completely unable to move and can only wait for death to come.”

Old A said: “Yes, I have seen this kind of state. In the end, they are neither human nor ghost. It is very miserable. Many people can’t stand direct self-understanding. I have never seen such a weird creature as this one that can still be agile and powerful after the second mutation.”

Du Yan was very confused, tilted his head, and asked: “That is to say, this thing, let’s say it is a human, you have never seen it before. Then the matter is interesting. Why did it appear here? You don’t have any large radiation source here, and there is nothing special…”

Hearing this, Shen Heng seemed to be inspired and looked directly at Old A: “Let’s not talk about what this thing is. Before the attacks started at night, did anything unusual happen? Not just limited to people being injured, but also everything in the camp.”

Old A frowned and tried to recall for a moment before speaking hesitantly: “Actually, there is nothing special. If I really want to say something, the amount of anti-radiation medicines in the warehouse is decreasing very quickly.”

“Anti-radiation medicines?” Shen Heng asked: “So this time the intervals between you entrusting me to exchange medicines are shorter than before?”

Old A nodded: “Yes. I count the supplies in the warehouse every month. Last time I counted, I found that several boxes of anti-radiation medicines were missing. At that time, I wanted to investigate thoroughly, thinking that some thief in the camp had stolen the medicines.”

“Old Bao’s attitude was quite strange at the time. He insisted that I remembered it wrong. Of course, I didn’t accept it, but I took out the records to check and found that nothing was missing.” Old A scratched his head: “But after thinking about it, I still think I should be right.”

This really doesn’t sound like a big deal, and it’s no wonder that Old A never mentioned it before.

Du Yan suddenly asked a strange question: “Is Old Bao’s wife a Pure One?”

Old A said: “Yes, he originally formed this tribe because he married a Pure One woman, but his identity card was taken away by the Homeland No. 2, and he was expelled.”

“Is his wife in the camp?” Du Yan asked again.

Old A shook his head: “Actually, Old Bao’s current wife is not the same one as before. You know that Infected have a long life span. His first wife died of old age a long time ago. This one is his third wife, but she also died of illness some time ago.”

Du Yan suddenly smiled: “He is quite persistent in marrying so many Pure One wives.”

Old A sighed: “Old Bao is a good person in every way, except that he is too obsessed with the continuation of his bloodline. It would have been fine if he was so traditional and conservative pre-war, but in this situation, isn’t he asking for trouble by being so obsessed?”

“It sounds like Old Bao has put in a lot of effort.”

“He put almost all his energy into this matter.” Old A spread his hands: “Old Bao is such a person who never gives up. He exchanged all the resources he collected for high-purity anti-radiation drugs and used them on several wives. Unfortunately, he still didn’t get a child.”

“There are so many interesting things in the world. Why make it so hard on yourself?” Du Yan finished listening and put his hands up to make a summary statement.

After Du Yan learned the information he wanted to know, he leaned back. Shen Heng began to ask about some details, and in the end, Old A could no longer remember anything, so he stopped.

After all the work, it was already late. Du Yan lazily leaned on the sofa, covered his mouth, and yawned secretly.

As soon as he made some movement, Shen Heng looked over and asked: “Are you sleepy?”

Du Yan nodded and said: “A little bit, I want to go to bed first.”

He originally just wanted to go back to his room to rest, but Shen Heng stood up and said: “Let’s stay here for now. Tomorrow, we will follow the blood trail and find the nest of the mutant creature. We should be able to solve these doubts.”

The accommodation that Old A arranged for Shen Heng and Du Yan was on the second floor of this activity center, and considering Shen Heng’s tall stature, he also very considerately arranged a room with a 2.2-meter bed.

Shen Heng was just planning to rest on the sofa, but Du Yan dragged him to bed.

His reason was very sufficient and convincing: “You broke the limb of that unknown creature today. What if it comes to take revenge at night?”

Shen Heng really didn’t dare to sleep with Du Yan because he couldn’t sleep if they were too close. He tried to refuse: “I’ll just sit on the sofa next to bed, it’s okay.”

Du Yan curled his lips and said: “That thing is very fast. You know that a Pure One like me can’t avoid it even when I’m awake. If I fall asleep, I might not even know if my neck was bitten off. If you don’t protect me closely, I will be too scared to sleep.”

Shen Heng had no choice but to compromise and rubbed Du Yan’s hair: “You always have a new excuse.”

The room was plunged into darkness. Shen Heng still stared at the ceiling with his eyes half closed. He didn’t really need to sleep, and now that the mutant creature hadn’t been caught, he naturally couldn’t rest easy and fall asleep.

He listened to Du Yan’s regular breathing and suddenly felt a little relaxed. Just now, when he found out that this mutant creature might be a human, he was indeed a little worried. He felt that the future was unpredictable, and he didn’t know where the future of mankind would go.

However, Shen Heng now thought that even if the road ahead was dark, he still had a fine companion around him, and that was enough.

“……”

Du Yan was already very sleepy, and then the mood of the person next to him was up and down, sometimes depressed and sometimes happy, which completely drove Du Yan’s sleepiness away.

He felt that if he didn’t interrupt, he probably wouldn’t be able to sleep tonight: “Shen Heng, what do you think of what happened today?”

Now that Old A was not here, Shen Heng didn’t think too much when he spoke. He just spoke out his thoughts.

“I’m very worried that radiation will cause humans to mutate again, and after mutation, they will become such terrible monsters. Today’s fight with it also shows that this mutant has a certain intelligence. If it is really as I guessed, things will be troublesome.” Shen Heng sighed: “Mutated creatures with intelligence are much more difficult to deal with than those mutant animals or insects that only rely on instinct.”

“I can tell you very clearly that the mutant was definitely not caused by radiation causing secondary mutation of humans. As for the specific situation, we can only be sure after we catch it.”

Although Du Yan did not say the reason, his voice was very firm, which made Shen Heng feel relieved. He stopped thinking about it and just waited until tomorrow to find a way to capture the mutant creature.

However, the next morning, Shen Heng’s plan failed, and he was unable to continue.

After they finished washing up and went downstairs to wait for Old A, they saw a person in the lobby.

After seeing the man’s appearance clearly, Shen Heng stopped walking, and Du Yan bumped into Shen Heng’s back without noticing.

His nose ached from the impact of Shen Heng’s back muscles, and he almost burst into tears.

Shen Heng did not turn around but instead protected Du Yan behind him, looking extremely alert.

Du Yan asked in a low voice: “What’s wrong?”

Shen Heng replied: “That person is Old Bao.”

When he said this, Shen Heng’s eyes never left the floor below. Old Bao was standing in the direction of the hall, seemingly waiting for someone, and he didn’t notice the two people upstairs for a while.

Du Yan came over and squeezed Shen Heng’s hand: “He should be waiting for Old A. Let’s see what’s going on first.”
