Chapter 205. Half Step To God
Abbot Changjing’s words not only shocked the elder and two disciples, but also made the monks of Longyin Temple look at each other in disbelief and horror.
Why were they so surprised? Because bad karma and karmic fire are not things that can arise in the mundane world, much less be arbitrarily extracted, refined, and used to harm others. “Karma” is the element that constitutes cause and effect, while “karmic force” refers to the collection of results caused by a person’s past, present, and future actions. It is the cause that governs reincarnation, the result borne in this life, which then affects that person’s next life, and may even extend endlessly into the next life after that, and even into eternity……
Karma drives reincarnation, so who is the one who controls karma? To Taoism, it is a deity; to Buddhism, it is the Buddha!
But at this very moment, right under the noses of both Buddhism and Taoism, someone actually extracted karma and refined it into a witchcraft to disfigure others. Even with the facts right before their eyes, these two groups found it hard to believe that it was real. It was as absurd as someone obtaining a divine sword that could split the heavens and the earth, but using it to slaughter chickens and geese!
“Abbot Changjing, are you sure you’re not mistaken?” The elder repeatedly asked, his mind in turmoil.
“There is no mistake, this is indeed bad karma and karmic fire.” Abbot Changjing said, pressing his palms together, “I was fortunate enough to follow a Living Buddha in practicing Tibetan Buddhism and receive his teachings on mind and nature. I had a sudden enlightenment between life and death, entered the intermediate state, and witnessed the impermanence of life and the scenes of hell. This black fire is exactly the same as the karmic fire of hell in my memory. That’s why I tried reciting scriptures to liberate the souls of the deceased, but I didn’t expect it to actually work.”
Abbot Changjing turned to Lin Nianci and Jian Ya, and said without sorrow or joy, “Karmic fire is the most intense fire in hell, used only to punish those who have wronged the innocent in the mortal world. May I ask what you two have done to cause yourselves to be consumed by karmic fire?”
Lin Nianci’s face turned deathly pale, and she shook her head repeatedly.
Having barely regained her composure, Jian Ya remained stunned for a while before saying in a hoarse voice, “I don’t know either.”
“You don’t know?” Ni Xinhai, finally freed from the excruciating pain, sneered, “Didn’t you wrong any innocent people? Who are the people your fans are attacking online? What are you spending money to hire so many online trolls for? You even made us cooperate with you to lie and slander Fan Jialuo! The fires of hell should burn people like you to death!”
With each word Ni Xinhai spoke, her festering lips would crack open into more tiny, bleeding wounds, causing excruciating pain. But the resentment in her heart was far more intense than the pain, if she didn’t vent it, she feared she would suffocate there.
“What right do you have to talk to me like that? Weren’t those two good-for-nothings, Lin Nian’en and Lin Nianci, hired by you? If you hadn’t sworn that they could definitely cure my face, would I be in this state now?” Jian Ya retorted sharply.
Ni Xinhai fell silent, her hateful gaze immediately shifting to Lin Nian’en and Lin Nianci.
Both persons lowered their heads, their expressions one of extreme embarrassment. The elder and the two middle-aged men, though their faces were dark and they seemed displeased, had nothing to say. They were the ones who took the case, the ones who misidentified the dark aura, and the ones who had caused the person’s condition, they could tolerate being scolded.
They could tolerate it, but some couldn’t. Wan Shishu, usually quiet, suddenly erupted, shrilly, “You two are both culprits! Neither of you can accuse the other! Ni Xinhai, if you hadn’t believed these quacks, our faces wouldn’t be in this state! Jian Ya, if you hadn’t insisted on opposing Fan Jialuo, refusing to apologize and forbidding us from apologizing, we wouldn’t have chosen the wrong path! Fan Jialuo said long ago that the dark aura on our faces wasn’t evil qi, but bad karma, and that if the wrong method was used to remove it, the consequences would be extremely serious. You all heard that, but you just wouldn’t believe it! And you, you heard it clearly too!”
Wan Shishu pointed her blood-stained finger at Lin Nian’en, who froze, his face turning from white to pale.
Abbot Changjing and the elder had already discerned some clues, and a dark glint flashed in their eyes simultaneously. Someone had actually seen through the dark aura as bad karma so early on—how profound must their cultivation be?
Even Abbot Changjing knew nothing about karma and karmic fire before he received the Living Buddha’s instruction and entered the intermediate state.
The two of them looked at Wan Shishu at the same time, their minds racing.
Wan Shishu was still angrily berating Lin Nian’en, her eyes filled with tears of regret, “You kept claiming to be a successor of some orthodox Taoist sect, and you denigrated Fan Jialuo to nothing, but what happened? The result proved that Fan Jialuo was right! He said the dark aura on our faces was bad karma, he said that you and your ShiJie couldn’t save us at all, he said that if we delayed any longer, our situation would get worse, and he said that only he in the world could save us! I almost believed him at the time, but your bullshit words cut off my path to survival! Look at my face, look at my face, every word he said is now reflected on my face!”
Lin Nian’en dared not look at Wan Shishu’s bloodied and mangled face, and could only lower his head in shame.
Lin Nianci’s hands trembled with pain, her pupils dilated and contracted intermittently, and she was no longer able to react to the humiliation she had suffered.
But Wan Shishu wasn’t finished. She continued to question him, “Taoist Lin, didn’t you swear that what we were tainted by wasn’t bad karma, but evil qi? Didn’t you pat your chest and guarantee that your ShiJie could cure us? But look at the state we’ve become! You’ve ruined our faces, ruined our careers, ruined our lives! What’s the difference between you and a murderer? If I had a knife, I’d really like to stab you to death and then stab myself to death!”
At this point, she broke down in tears, her eyes filled with a fierce determination to die. Her nose had rotted and fallen off on the way here, it was obvious that even the most skilled plastic surgeon couldn’t simply attach a nose out of thin air, especially since her flesh was still rotting and would soon expose the bone.
If this deteriorating trend is not alleviated or contained, they may die! It would be better if they died quickly, but the most terrifying thing is if their whole body slowly rots away, yet they just can’t die. That’s the most terrifying thing!
Thinking of that future, Wan Shishu didn’t even have the strength to cry. Her eyes were dry, unable to shed a single tear. This was what it meant to be utterly heartbroken. If only she had known, if only she had known… She closed her eyes, and what appeared in her mind was Fan Jialuo’s always outstretched, waiting, clean hand.
As she was torn apart by regret, Bi Zetai began to wail, “Park Jiejie called me, and she told me…” He hiccuped, his voice growing even more sorrowful, “That Teacher Fan was still waiting at her house and that I should go there for treatment right away. If only I had listened to her, wuwuwu, I regret it so much!”
His confessions were like a vast, poisonous vine, growing rampant and climbing through everyone’s hearts, bringing unbearable pain. They were so close to salvation, just one step away, yet they couldn’t take that step. Why? What blinded them, what deafened them? It was arrogance, prejudice, foolishness, malice, and ignorance!
Bi Zetai cried harder and harder, Wan Shishu swayed several times as if she were about to faint, and Jian Ya clutched her throat, letting out a scream of utter regret. She had clearly called Fan Jialuo! That person didn’t want anything, just an apology. An apology, only three words, it only takes a second to say, is it really that difficult? Why did she refuse then? Why?
Jian Ya wanted to strangle herself, while Ni Xinhai pointed at her and laughed. These people were driven mad by unbearable pain and regret.
Seeing their miserable state, Lin Nian’en felt so guilty he could hardly breathe. He had originally intended to save them, without any ulterior motives or desire for personal gain. But he truly hadn’t expected them to be tainted by bad karma, who would have thought of it except Fan Jialuo?
Abbot Changjing frowned and asked, “Does the name Fan Jialuo sound familiar?”
“Yes!” The elder rubbed his forehead, deep in thought.
“What kind of person can spot bad karma at a glance?” Abbot Changjing asked again.
The elder shook his head and remained silent.
Abbot Changjing recited a Buddhist phrase and said in a deep voice, “Those who have been to hell can know, those who have not lost their memories after reincarnation can know, and those who control reincarnation can know.”
“They all sound extraordinary.” The elder’s voice was a little hoarse.
Abbot Changjing closed his eyes and said, “There are even more extraordinary ones, those who have transcended reincarnation, control good and evil, and possess an immortal soul and memories of countless lifetimes.”
The elder exclaimed in horror, “Isn’t that a god?”
Abbot Changjing recited a Buddhist phrase and corrected him, saying, “To be precise, it is half a step towards becoming a god.”
“No, it can’t be! No mortal can ever become a god. The spiritual energy of heaven and earth is dissipating, reincarnation is ending, hell is collapsing, and merit is being destroyed. No one can become a god anymore. Even the dragon veins on earth are dying one after another. Who can become a god? Even our Shizu couldn’t do it, let alone a young man in his early twenties?” The elder repeatedly denied it.
“Is he really a young man? The name Fan Jialuo always gives me a strange sense of familiarity. You know, most of the people I’m familiar with are older.” Abbot Changjing sighed silently, then continued, “It’s one thing to be able to recognize bad karma, but if he can truly dispel it, then his strength is beyond doubt. Such a person’s background is definitely not simple.”
“Didn’t they say there was another celebrity receiving treatment from Fan Jialuo? I’ll find someone to inquire about the situation right away.” The elder took out his phone and dialed a number. Just over ten minutes later, several photos were sent back, all of them of Park Liyu. She was sitting in a clean white examination room, and a doctor wearing a mask was pinching her chin and carefully examining her face.
The photo was taken secretly, but the image was very clear. Park Liyu’s face had red patches here and swelling there, and some minor cuts on her forehead and cheeks, but they weren’t serious, it looked like an allergic reaction. Compared to the miserable state of Jian Ya and the others, her minor injuries were nothing, with some ointment, they would heal in about two weeks.
Lin Nian’en wanted to know more about Park Liyu’s situation than anyone else, so he braced himself and ran to his master’s side to peek at her a few times, and then made a surprised sound.
Seeing his reaction, Jian Ya understood immediately, and her vision blurred. Ni Xinhai, however, was still unwilling to give up. She rushed to the elder’s side and looked at the photo, then suddenly grabbed her hair and screamed, “Why is her face healed! Wasn’t she the one with the most severe condition?”
Yes, in her opinion, Park Liyu’s swollen face could be described as perfectly fine, at least her nose was still there, and her features were intact.
“Why! Why won’t we apologize to Fan Jialuo? Is it so hard to apologize to him?” Ni Xinhai ran to Jian Ya’s side, grabbed her neck hard, and screamed, “It’s you! You’re the one who ruined us! If you hadn’t stopped us from apologizing to him, we wouldn’t be in this situation! I’ll kill you! I’ll kill you! You and Su Fengxi are both disgusting monsters!”
The two wrestled, further aggravating their injuries.
Abbot Changjing quickly directed the monks to pull them apart, and finally pointed to the phone screen and said, “Her bad karma has been absolved. This benefactor Fan is no ordinary person.”
“Fan Jialuo, surname Fan and given name Jialuo, must have some connection with your Buddhist sect, right?” The elder man pondered.
“No, if this benefactor is a Buddhist, I would certainly recognize him.”
“This name sounds more and more familiar. What kind of person could eliminate bad karma? A demigod? Definitely not! Could it be that he possesses some kind of magical artifact?”
“A magical artifact that can eliminate bad karma would be a treasure of any sect, wouldn’t it?” Master Changjing sighed.
These words struck the elder like a bolt of lightning, causing him to turn pale with horror. Changjing carefully observed his expression and saw fear, disgust, and a sense of impending doom deep in his eyes. He must have remembered Fan Jialuo’s identity and had some grudges against him.
However, this was all a matter for the Taoist sect and had nothing to do with the Buddhist sect, so Changjing closed his eyes and silently recited Amituofu(amitabha).
On the other end, after seeing Park Liyu’s face, which had slight flaws but was by no means disfiguring, Jian Ya and the others went crazy. After bickering for a while, they all took out their phones to call Fan Jialuo. For some reason, Jian Ya was the first to get through again.
“Teacher Fan, help me! You must save me!”
“That Taoist Lin Nianci can’t cure you?” Fan Jialuo’s gentle voice came through the receiver, surprisingly without any gloating, but rather with deep disappointment. He seemed to be hoping for good news, so he answered the phone after only one ring.
“She can’t cure us!” Jian Ya’s sobs were filled with deep resentment.
“Didn’t she see that the dark aura on your face was a sign of bad karma?”
“No, she and her Shidi are both liars!”
Fan Jialuo fell silent, then let out a low sigh. He seemed to have been eagerly anticipating Lin Nianci’s performance and held her in high regard, hence his disappointment. In a daze, Jian Ya even heard him murmur, “Isn’t it her?”
“What?” Jian Ya hurriedly asked, then pleaded, “Teacher Fan, please save me! I apologize to you. I’ll post a public apology on Weibo right now and ask my fans to never attack you again……”
Fan Jialuo interrupted her, his tone as gentle as ever, but his words were icy cold, “Ms. Jian, three strikes and you’re out. I’ve offered to save you several times, have you even kept count?”
“Two, twice!” Jian Ya cried anxiously, “One more time, Teacher Fan, I have one more chance!”
“The first time was in Zhao Wenyan’s office, the second time was online, the third time was when I called you in person. If you had given me a positive answer each time, I would have reached out and pulled you out of the mire. But you refused each time.”
Fan Jialuo slowly said, “Ms. Jian, as I have said, my mercy is not for you to squander, so this time, I also choose to refuse you.”
Jian Ya cried out no repeatedly, pleading for Teacher Fan, but couldn’t utter a single word to move him. Why had she been so ruthless before? Why had she left no room for compromise, insisting on fighting Teacher Fan to the death? What had he done to offend her?
Jian Ya smacked her head hard, filled with regret.
Fan Jialuo sighed softly and said, “Ms. Jian, I actually pointed out a clear path for you a long time ago, find a virtuous monk to perform a ritual to help you pass on your karma. Only they can help you eliminate your bad karma now.”
The phone call ended, and Jian Ya grabbed Abbot Changjing’s robe as if it were a lifeline, while the others also looked over with intense eyes.
Abbot Changjing clasped his hands together and slowly said, “Amituofu, this old monk can chant sutras for you all to help you benefactors, but it will take forty-nine days to completely eliminate these bad karma. During these forty-nine days, you will suffer the pain of skin erosion every day. Even if the bad karma is eliminated, your face will not be saved.”
“What did you say?” Jian Ya, who had just gained a glimmer of hope, felt as if she had suddenly fallen from a great height into an abyss, with a dazed feeling of being shattered to pieces and all hope extinguished.
Ni Xinhai and the others collapsed to the ground. It would take forty-nine days to escape the agony of their flesh rotting continuously, would their faces even be presentable? Teacher Fan, Teacher Fan, where are you?
As these people silently chanted the name of Fan Jialuo, the elder also pondered those three words before hurriedly leaving Longyin Temple and rushing back to the mountain gate. In his haste, he even forgot to give a few instructions to his disciples. Sitting on the straw mat, Lin Nianci silently watched his retreating figure, then closed her eyes listlessly.
