Chapter 262. Old Monster

Chief Yan knew that the mutants were a difficult group to deal with, but he didn’t expect them to be this ruthless. Whether it was bullets or artillery fire, hitting that person felt like hitting a metal plate, and did nothing to slow his escape.

He glanced back before disappearing completely into the dark forest.

Amidst the deafening roar of artillery fire, Chief Yan saw a face he would never forget. To be precise, it wasn’t a face at all, but a skull wrapped in human skin. The lips had vanished, revealing two rows of sharp, blackish-yellow teeth, thick saliva trailing silvery threads that swirled in the air, as if ready to devour anyone. His eyes were set in deep, sunken sockets, the pupils a scarlet red, filled with a cruel and merciless glint.

In the instant he vanished, Chief Yan would never have mistaken the overwhelming murderous intent in his eyes. If he were allowed to escape today, he would surely commit a bloodbath in the future.

“Surround this mountain forest, conduct a thorough search! Hurry, hurry, hurry!” Chief Yan had just given this order when he immediately waved his hand, “Don’t go, everyone come back! We can’t split up, just surround this mountain!”

Even such dense artillery fire couldn’t subdue this monster, sending the soldiers to search separately would only put them in a fatal situation. Chief Yan knew that the enemy was very powerful, capable of holding off an entire army by himself, so he submitted another application to his superiors, requesting that they send another army.

The mountain and the nearby roads were quickly blocked off, and no one was allowed to pass through.

Hundreds of drones were launched into the mountains to track the mummified corpse. He ran incredibly fast, and under the cover of night, he moved like a ghost, his location impossible for the human eye to pinpoint, all that could be seen was the swaying branches behind him.

In just half an hour, he crossed two high mountains and ran towards the border between the province and the city.

Chief Yan couldn’t keep up with his speed, nor could he withstand his armour, and he had no idea how high his combat power was.

However, his doubts were quickly resolved by the ghostly figure itself. He seemed to have gotten tired of running, his speed gradually slowed down, and then he changed to an S-shaped escape route, heading straight in a certain direction.

If a boulder blocked his path, he leapt over it with a single push of his legs, his jumping ability was astonishing, as if he had completely defied the effects of gravity, when he encountered a cliff, he jumped straight down, creating a deep crater upon landing, yet he remained unharmed, when he encountered a cliff that he must climb, he used his sharp fingernails to dig deep into the rock, scaling the top in no time, as fast as if it were flat ground……

In short, no matter how many obstacles he encountered, nothing could slow him down. In this perilous mountain forest, he was practically invincible and thrived like a fish in water.

Upon seeing the footage transmitted back by the drone, Chief Yan couldn’t help but gasp.

But that wasn’t all. He soon discovered that this monster’s destination was a ranch with thousands of cows. It tore through the wire mesh with its bare hands and ran towards the huge cowshed, its long, blood-red tongue protruding from between its teeth, flicking sticky saliva into its mouth. Its greedy appearance made it seem like a starving ghost.

The cowshed was built to be very tall and spacious. A drone flew in and captured the scene that could give Chief Yan nightmares for half a month.

The mummified corpse had pierced the belly of a cow, quickly tearing a huge, dark, bloody hole in it. It was a real piercing, like a tick’s mouthparts deeply embedded in a human body, impossible to pull out. Eating had become its only desire and driving force.

The cow let out a painful cry, and the surrounding cows paced restlessly.

Every single one of them was massive and well-fed, weighing anywhere from three or four hundred pounds to nearly a thousand. Yet, when they stepped on the monster, it didn’t feel a thing, as if it were nothing more than a mosquito.

He devoured the cow greedily, moving incredibly fast, until half his body was inside its abdomen, hollowing it out completely. This speed and method of eating defied human behavior, even more terrifying than that of a carnivorous bird of prey.

The drone hovering in mid-air broadcast this inhumane scene to the mobile control center, causing Chief Yan and everyone present to gag. Then they thought, if eating cows was a choice this monster made out of desperation, what if it had other options? What would it eat?

The gagging gradually stopped, but everyone’s expressions became extremely unpleasant.

The monster devoured a cow in just a few minutes, then stabbed into the belly of another cow and did the same.

The entire cowshed was covered in crimson blood, and the monster, like a raging shark, swam wildly and hunted its prey in this sea of blood.

“Chief, look at his body!” A lieutenant exclaimed in horror.

Chief Yan took a closer look, and cold sweat immediately poured down his back.

The monster’s body had grown a thin layer of muscle, and the more cows it ate, the stronger it became. Its face was covered with deep wrinkles, its skin was extremely aged, and its sparse white hair clung to its scalp, threatening to fall out. It looked as old as a withered tree, yet its body was so strong that it could kill a cow with a single punch.

After eating dozens of cows, he wiped the blood from his sharp teeth and ran towards the ranch workers’ dormitory.

The drone immediately followed.

Chief Yan’s forehead was beaded with cold sweat, and he shouted sharply, “This is bad! He’s going to eat people!” This was a conclusion that required no thought. Since this monster was somehow connected to Zhang Yang, and Zhang Yang could devour human hearts, how could he possibly be a vegetarian?

“Fire the bullets immediately!” Chief Yan gave the order.

He hadn’t expected the monster to run so fast, so he hadn’t had time to evacuate the people from the provincial and municipal borders, this was his dereliction of duty.

Several drones immediately followed the monster, firing bullets. However, this was utterly useless. Even when it was still a desiccated corpse, it was impervious to bullets, now, with its body so strong, how could it fear a few bullets? It leaped high into the air, wielding its claws, slicing the metal drones in two, landing as lightly as a leaf.

Several other drones transmitted the horrific images back to the source.

“His fighting ability is extremely high. If we let him escape our encirclement, this blood-soaked cowshed will be a recurring scene wherever he goes. He will eat anything, including humans!” When Chief Yan came to this conclusion, he felt a deep sense of despair.

His subordinates stared in disbelief at the live broadcast, bewildered.

Even if all the soldiers in the army had wings, it would be too late to fly to the ranch and rescue the workers.

The monster smashed through the window, jumped into the room, and began a frenzied killing spree.

The drone couldn’t fly inside to film, but it captured those piercing screams and transmitted them back clearly.

A moment later, the blood-soaked monster slowly walked out, and its current appearance filled Chief Yan and the others with even deeper horror and fear.

Having devoured so many cows, he had only developed a thin layer of muscle. But after his rampage through the workers’ quarters, his muscles swelled up, appearing so powerful and fierce. The only thing that remained unchanged was his aged, withered face. The wrinkles on his face were still deep and messy, crisscrossing and sculpting his already unsightly features into a grotesque shape.

Judging from his physical changes, humans were indeed his favorite food, providing him with the maximum amount of energy. After escaping this mountain forest, there was no doubt that he would go on a killing spree and devour everything in sight.

The drone took a close-up photo of him, and the technicians at the mobile control center used this photo to check his real identity in the database. Naturally, the first people they compared were those associated with the Zhang family. The technicians thought this would take some time, but to their surprise, the photo appeared as soon as it was scanned by the facial recognition software.

Chief Yan bent down to take a look and immediately gasped.

The others also gathered around to look, each one staring in disbelief.

Who would have thought that this hideous and ferocious monster was actually Zhang Wencheng, the patriarch of the Zhang family who had passed away two or three decades ago, and Zhang Yang’s great-grandfather? Speaking of Zhang Wencheng, he was also a legendary figure. During the War of Resistance against Japan, he donated most of his family fortune to the country. After the war, he was honored with the title of “Pillar of the Nation,” but he abandoned everything and emigrated abroad with his entire family, escaping the most turbulent decade. Later, he returned and developed the Zhang family, which had a weak foundation, into a behemoth.

When he died, national leaders visited his funeral hall to offer flowers, never expecting that he would still be alive! How old is he now? One hundred or one hundred and twenty?

Chief Yan silently did some mental calculations and was immediately horrified. A person who should have been dead long ago was not only still alive, but had also turned into this ghostly figure. How had he managed to survive all these years?

Chief Yan naturally thought of the cows that had been eaten to the point of being empty shells, and the workers’ dormitory whose fate remained unknown to this day. His tense face immediately turned ashen.

This person absolutely cannot be allowed to live!

“Don’t worry about capturing him alive. Dead is fine! Send these images to the superiors, request a lockdown of this area, and deploy artillery units.” Chief Yan slammed his fist on the table, urging them on, his voice hoarse with fear and anxiety.

“The artillery seems to be useless.” A lieutenant general covered his face in dejection.

As he spoke, a combat helicopter finally arrived at the ranch and fired a shell at the blood-soaked monster. He was hit, but crawled out of the smoke-filled crater and disappeared into the forest with a few leaps.

Chief Yan slumped into a chair, his hair and military uniform soaked with cold sweat.

If even artillery can’t stop this monster, who can?

As soon as the thought crossed Chief Yan’s mind, a flash of white light, as bright as lightning, swept through him. He then stood up abruptly and shouted urgently, “Quickly notify Teacher Fan! Quickly, quickly, quickly!”

He originally thought that sending an army of several thousand men to capture one person would be enough, so he never intended to bother Teacher Fan. After all, Teacher Fan had just solved those three tragic cases and had been tirelessly appraising many antiques, so he was at his most exhausted.

But now they really have no choice but to seek help from Teacher Fan. If there is anyone in the world who can deal with such a monster, Chief Yan can’t think of anyone other than Teacher Fan.

The mere mention of ‘Teacher Fan’ instantly brought life to the control center, which had been filled with despair. Everyone’s faces lit up with excitement, and they immediately dialed the phone number that symbolized hope.

Meanwhile, several drones finally caught up with the monster.

After eating his fill, he seemed less eager, leaping high into the mountains and landing lightly, wandering through the dense forest like a flying ape. After several tens of minutes, he entered a secluded valley and jumped off a cliff shrouded in thick fog.

Several drones immediately swooped down, using infrared scanners to search for him.

His body temperature was very low, and after imaging, only his heart was orange-red, the rest of his body blended into the thick fog and was completely indistinguishable. The drone could only track him based on this small orange-red heart, and it almost lost him several times.

Finally, he stopped running and took a few slow steps.

Several drones flew past him, dodging his unexpectedly swung black fingernails, hovering high in the air beyond his reach. With the field of vision widened, the scenes captured by the cameras became more comprehensive and realistic.

Upon seeing the scene transmitted back by the drone, Chief Yan clutched his heart and swayed as he collapsed to the ground.

The technicians facing the monitor screen were so frightened that they hurriedly stepped back, knocking over their chairs in the process.

They were all soldiers who had experienced war and slaughter, and their mental fortitude was far stronger than that of ordinary people. However, faced with the scene before them, they were all unable to resist the immense fear that surged from the depths of their hearts.

The monster was standing in front of a small mountain made of bones.

Yes, towering piles of skeletons, weighing tens of tons, countless skeletons too many to bear even a glance, were simply abandoned in this deserted valley, shrouded in a foul-smelling mist. What was even more terrifying was that the skeletons became smaller and smaller as they went up, some only the size of a palm, resembling newborn babies.

This hellish scene was sure to give anyone nightmares for months on end!

But once the monster arrived at this incredibly dark and terrifying place, it seemed to return home. Its tense body visibly relaxed, and it climbed step by step to the top of the mountain made of piled-up bones, where it sat down. It looked up and smiled at the hovering drones.

Facing his face, dripping with saliva, covered in blood, and radiating murderous intent, Chief Yan felt a sharp pain in his heart. He knew this monster was provoking him, and by extension, this fully armed army. He was absolutely certain he had the ability to escape from this mountain, so he wasn’t in a hurry at all.

He returned to his lair, sat down to catch his breath, and looked so relaxed and at ease.

Upon seeing this monster, several lieutenants couldn’t help but ask in fear and unease, “Can Teacher Fan really deal with him?”

Just then, Fan Jialuo arrived, reviewed all the surveillance footage, and shook his head, saying, “I can’t handle him.”

Chief Yan said in a trembling voice, “Impossible! If even you can’t deal with him, then who in this world can kill him?”

“The patriarch of the Tianshui Sect is capable, but he is in seclusion.” Fan Jialuo said matter-of-factly.

Chief Yan, who had just offended the Tianshui Sect to the death, felt a wave of dizziness.

At the same time, the monster produced a blue fruit from somewhere, stuffed it into its mouth full of sharp teeth, chewed it casually, and swallowed it. Then, its skin slowly became smooth and white, restoring its human appearance. It was incredibly handsome, like a bright moon in the sky, exuding a bewitching aura. Its long, narrow eyebrows, high nose, and thin, red lips seemed like the most exquisite creation of God.

Compared to Fan Jialuo, his appearance was in no way inferior.

Chief Yan was stunned again when he saw his face.

Isn’t……, isn’t this Zhang Lingxuan, the greatest superstar of the last century, a triple threat who conquered film, television, and music? He was the man whose song shattered the hearts of women across the nation and whose movie captivated countless young girls. The icon whose funeral drew such massive crowds that the streets emptied out, the legend who, even now, commands tens of millions of followers and countless dedicated fan communities on Weibo!

Zhang Wencheng and Zhang Lingxuan, are they actually the same person?

Chief Yan’s mind was completely in chaos, and his heart was pounding as if it would burst at any moment.

“Teacher Fan, what should we do? Is it too late for me to kneel down in front of Tianshui Temple right now and beg their ancestor to come out of seclusion?” To protect the people around him, Chief Yan was willing to do anything, even if it meant losing face.

Fan Jialuo patted a ceramic jar he was holding in his hands, his tone calm, “What I cannot do, they can do. All good and evil have cause and effect, it is not just empty talk.”

“They? They who?” Chief Yan looked behind Teacher Fan, who was all alone, and felt increasingly lost and fearful.
